Tank Man

In 1989, China was going through a revolution. As the democratic protesters revelled in the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the government fought back, firing at anyone causing a disturbance. As a demonstration of power, the Chinese government rode military tanks into the streets of Beijing in hopes of shutting down any ambitions of success.

The massacre committed by the government of China seemed to have worked as the streets were filled with bloody victims and sights of horror, that is until the tank man took a stand. As an act of resistance, he placed himself in the path of four tanks, and kept his ground. As the tanks attempted to spare his life and drive around the man, he stepped back into their path. This act of resilience fuelled the democratic people of China, as he became an international symbol of hope.
